Beyond Just a CVI: Helping Your Show Steer Perform at Their Best

Show season comes with a long checklistโ€”feeding, fitting, grooming, hauling, paperwork, and making sure your steer is ready to look and feel his best when it matters most.

At Fauna Doc Integrative Veterinary Services, we can help take care of two important pieces of your show-season preparation: Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVIs) and MagnaWave PEMF therapy.

Does My Show Steer Need a CVI?

If you're headed to a Florida livestock show or fair, don't forget about the health paperwork.

Florida-origin cattle exhibiting at public annual fairs permitted by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) are required to be accompanied by an Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (OCVI) dated no more than 90 days prior to exhibition.

Individual shows may have additional requirements, so always check the rules for your specific fair or show before you haul.

A CVI Requires an In-Person Veterinary Examination

This is an important one for exhibitors to know:

A Florida CVI cannot legally be issued through a video or telehealth examination. Your steer must be seen in person by a veterinarian.

Florida Statute ยง 474.2021(4)(h) specifically states that a veterinarian practicing veterinary telehealth:

โ€œMay not use veterinary telehealth to issue an international or interstate travel certificate or a certificate of veterinary inspection.โ€

So while Florida allows veterinary telehealth for certain types of veterinary care, a video inspection is not sufficient for issuing a CVI.

An in-person examination allows your veterinarian to properly identify your steer, evaluate his current health, look for evidence of infectious or contagious disease, and certify the animal being presented on the official paperwork.

Don't Forget Your Steer's Official Identification

Florida exhibition cattle are also required to have official individual identification.

For many show steers, this is an 840 Animal Identification Number (AIN) ear tag. An 840 tag carries a unique 15-digit identification number beginning with 840, the U.S. country code.

When completing the CVI, we need to accurately document the animal's official identification. If your steer already has an 840 AIN tag, please make sure it is accessible and readable at the appointment.

Before your CVI appointment, have ready:

  • Your steer and his official identification

  • The complete 15-digit 840 AIN number, if an 840 tag is being used

  • Owner/exhibitor information

  • The physical location where the steer is currently housed

  • Show/fair name, location, and dates

  • Any additional health requirements provided by your specific show

Having this information available helps make the CVI appointment and paperwork much easier.

Make the Most of the Visit: Add MagnaWave PEMF

If we're already at the barn completing your steerโ€™s required in-person CVI examination, it can also be a great opportunity to add a MagnaWave PEMF session as part of your show-prep routine.

Show cattle have a job to do.

They need to walk comfortably, stand correctly, stay composed in a busy environment, and present themselves at their best in the ring. Between hauling, fitting, changes in routine, long periods standing, and time on the move, show season can place additional physical and mental demands on them.

MagnaWave PEMF therapy may help support:

  • Muscle comfort and recovery

  • Healthy circulation

  • Mobility and comfortable movement

  • Relaxation and overall well-being

  • Recovery following hauling, exercise, and showing

The goal is simple: help your steer move freely, feel good, stay relaxed, and present at his best when it matters most.

Before the Showโ€”or After

PEMF can be incorporated at different points in your show schedule. A session before the show can be used as part of your preparation and wellness routine, while a post-show session may help support recovery following hauling, standing, and competition.

Every animal is different, so recommendations can be tailored to your steer, travel schedule, and upcoming show calendar.

One Barn Visit. Two Show-Season Needs.

When scheduling your steerโ€™s CVI with Fauna Doc, ask about pairing the appointment with a MagnaWave PEMF session.

Get the required in-person veterinary inspection and paperwork taken care of while giving your steer some extra support to move freely, feel good, stay relaxed, and present at his best in the show ring.
